Individuals on the autism spectrum are seven times more likely to have an encounter with law enforcement than their typically developing peers. Fortunately, there are some common-sense steps that you can take to prevent an unfortunate situation from occurring.

Five Important Safety Tips for Families

  • Tip #1 Register the special needs of your child in the 911 database and inform the local dispatch service that you have someone with autism living in your home.

  • Tip #2 Display an Autism Alert decal in the front window of any car in which your family member who has ASD routinely travels.

  • Tip #3 Review the locks in your home and consider the use of an alarm system.

  • Tip #4 Teach your family member with ASD to carry an identification card or to wear a medical alert bracelet indicating the nature of his or her disability.

  • Tip #5 From an early age, teach children with ASD to recognize police, fire and other rescue personnel and how to behave in the presence of these officials.
